Suicide Squad will be hot garbage
Since Warner Bros. decided to officially release the Suicide Squad trailer last week, it’s only fitting that I talk about this movie. I’m not going to play nice.
THE PLOT
Suicide Squad is about an antihero team of incarcerated supervillains who do undercover work for the United States government. Bad guys working against their own self interests; it’s a superb premise. Unfortunately the film will most likely be hot garbage.
Besides the fact Suicide Squad looks like a bad cosplay movie; the cast of characters is longer than a Chris Jericho holds list. Deadshot, (who is now Black for some reason) the Joker, Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Boomerang, the Enchantress, Amanda Waller, Killer Croc, Katana, El Diablo, and Slipknot. The average person has no idea who these people are, yet they are thrown all together in a movie being portrayed as if they are already established. No back story whatsoever. Good luck trying to get enough screen time for this supervillain smorgasbord. Unless half the movie is going to be flashbacks we will have no reason to care about most of these people. It’s a shame considering Marvel has the best heroes and DC has always had the better villains.
Characters like Amanda Waller, and Rick Flagg can have their beginning start with this movie. But the supervillain group needs more. Just because they’re in a prison for the “worst of the worst”, isn’t good enough. There needs to be more for this film to be a winner. A Brett Favre pass into quadruple coverage has a better chance of succeeding. It would make more sense to make other movies, and TV shows with these villains showing up every now and then. You know, character development. And then have them all come together to form Suicide Squad. But that would make too much sense. Suicide Squad is a phenomenal idea that has mutated into a quick cash grab.
JOKER
The new look of Joker is the text book definition of trying too hard. What made the character so twisted was his mind. He became popular for doing the unthinkable. Why does he have grillz? Is Joker dropping an album soon? This version isn’t helping people forget about Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the iconic character. He looks like a millennial who is going overboard to try to make people think he’s crazy. Simply put, Jared Leto’s Joker reminds me of an over the top Conrad Hilton on meth.
Everyone and their mother knows who the Joker is, so an origin story isn’t really needed. Though, I would love to see a movie based on the character. Considering it’s never been done, it would be interesting. You could do so much with that, including the first interaction with Harley Quinn and build up as to why Batman hates him so much. Instead we will probably be force fed flashbacks and watch a version of a feud that takes place far past its genesis.
HARLEY QUINN
Some people hate how Harley Quinn looks. The complaints have merit but the trailer makes me believe she’s a few beers short of a 6 pack. That’s a good thing. What bothers me is how it’s looking like (from the trailer) what made her become a villain. In the comic she joined Joker willingly, out of love for him. I can’t say for certain but from the trailer it looks like Joker forces her to become evil by physically torturing her. That’s a significant departure from the character. Joker does horrible things to Quinn in the comics, but that begins after she joins him. And yes, there’s a huge difference. The Joker making Quinn his sidekick by physically abusing her to the point of insanity, instead of having her join him willingly, and staying even though he begins to beat the living shit out of her is a rather significant difference. It seems this movie might make her out to be the victim, when in reality (in the comics) she’s rotten to the core.
How Joker’s manipulates Harley Quinn is a key element to her origin; actual physical torture while she is still a shrink is not part of the story at all. It seems DC can’t even get that right.
HOPE?
There’s a small chance this movie could set up some interesting stories. In Batman v Superman, Robin seems to be already dead. Perhaps Suicide Squad will show Joker killing him. That would set up a very nice Red Hood story line in a Batman solo film. That is, if DC wanted to go that route. But their current track record has cursed them by my lack of faith.
Final Thoughts
Suicide Squad has a plethora of people we are suppose to be interested in. It’s a pity this film will probably fail because it is being rushed to try and catch up with what Marvel is doing. DC wants to reap the benefits of the Marvel Cinematic Universe without putting in the hard work. Yeah, that makes sense. 🙁
Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released on August 5, 2016.
I never understood interventions. What’s the point of being told you drink too much from a room full of reasons why you drink in the first place?
