  • PSN BACK ONLINE FOR DEVELOPERS, BUT ACCOUNT PROCESS IS BROKEN

One week ago, Sony entered the final steps of internally testing their rebuilt and newly fortified PSN. While there is still no timeline for the PSN coming back online for the general public, we’ve learned that the PSN developer network is back online, but not without some serious snags.

Giant Bomb‘s Patrick Klepek has been told by “developer sources” (plural) that the private developer network is running, but that certain pieces of the account restoration process are broken.

We know that Sony will require a firmware update when the PSN comes back online publicly, and that users will need to set new passwords for all of their accounts. However, according to these developers, they are unable to create new accounts (needed for multiplayer testing), and are having difficulty recovering their previous accounts because calling to mind “personal information” – details that very few have probably written down somewhere – is required for the recovery process.

Companies like From Software (developers of Dark Souls) have publicly expressed their concern about the 3 week PSN outage, because it cripples their ability to test the multiplayer components in their games – especially anything involving friends lists – thus halting development for likely dozens of companies. This could even lead to delayed release dates for high profile multiplayer shooters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3.
