  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Creators Developing Sci-Fi Shooter to 'Compete with Halo'

It's been well over a year since we first heard about former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella leaving the studio to form Respawn Entertainment (whose first title will be published by EA). And while many of us assumed that the new development team would go on to create a title to directly compete with Activision's Call of Duty, that now appears to not be the case.

EA Games label head Frank Gibeau hinted this past week at Respawn's first project as being something more akin to Halo, Gears of War and the newly announced Overstrike from Insomniac (the studio's first multiplatform title to be published by EA as well). Gibeau remarked to CVG that games from Respawn and Insomniac will be released when there is room for them "either in a release schedule or in a genre standpoint."

He continued, "Those typically are more sci-fi oriented shooters, whereas the Medal of Honor and Battlefield brands are obviously more modern military oriented. So it allows us to pick and choose the best of the sci-fi shooters. It allows us to compete with things like Gears and Halo and put them on places in our release calendar where they're not cannibalistic to the core business and that's the essential strategy going forward."

With EA already pushing Battlefield 3 this fall to compete head-to-head with Activision's Modern Warfare 3, we can certainly understand Gibeau and Respawn not wanting to create yet another military shooter for EA's portfolio.

There's no word on when Respawn's first project will finally be unveiled, and the founders are still in the midst of the ongoing lawsuit with Activision. EA, accused of plotting with West and Zampella, had been added as a defendant to the case at the start of the year as well.
