The California senate has passed a bill which will require video game retailers to both ensure that game ratings are clearly displayed, and that an explanation of the ratings be readily available to parents making purchases in the stores.
The bill, known as AB 1793, only awaits signing by California Governor Arnold Schwarznegger before becoming law.
While the Governor's signing is usually nothing more than a formality, some have wondered whether Schwarznegger's connections to video games -- his likeness appears in the upcoming Terminator 3 game for instance -- would influence his decision in this case.
"I am hopeful the Governor will keep his promise to protect California's children and sign this legislation warning parents of video game content," said California assembly member Leland Yee. "More needs to be done to help parents make good choices about which games are appropriate for children."
