Sony warns about fake online PSP update
Sony has put out a statement warning PSP owners not to download and install the "official update" that's been circulating around the Internet recently. The update supposedly fixes some bugs and other minor things, but the main reason people have been downloading it is because of its promised web browser, word processing/spreadsheet tools, calculator, and other software add-ons.
It sounds good, but the update actually doesn't contain any of the above. And, the big problem - installing the update on a PSP unit will cause it to stop working.
"We have become aware that there is a software program going around on some Web sites and Internet bulletin boards claiming to be an update file that rewrites the system software of the PSP hardware," said Nanako Kato [cq], a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. in Tokyo. "This software has not been issued officially by SCEI and does not function properly. We advise our users not to execute or apply the program as it will cause the PSP hardware to stop operating."
According to Kato, the update, which was originally obtained from a Sony server, was developed by SCEI engineers, but contains only dummy data and was not supposed to be released yet.
"It is not supposed to be used at this time," she said.
So, do as she says, and hold off on installing the update until Sony releases an officially issued one that actually works.
If you read this too late and already installed the update on your Japanese PSP, don't freak out. You can send your PSP to SCEI, and they'll fix it, but you will have to pay a fee. Still, it's better than no PSP.
