  • DS online network revealed

Nintendo is finally launching the long-awaited online service for the DS. DSes will be able to wirelessly connect to each other online, enabling gamers to play with others around the world.

The online service will begin later this year. DS owners will be able to connect to the service at Wi-Fi hot spots, which Nintendo will set up worldwide. The connection will be "simple and seamless", and the connection and infrastructure will be provided by Nintendo for free.

Once the service begins later this year, Nintendo DS users will be able to connect to the service wirelessly at Wi-Fi hot spots, whether they’re at home, in a hotel or at a coffee shop.

One of the first games to take advantage of this will be the DS version of Animal Crossing. Instead of just via memory card, you'll be able to visit towns "across the world."

Mario Kart DS was shown, and Iwata participated in an eight-player wireless demo along with some audience members. This was just a demo of the local wireless play that already exists in some DS games.

Over four million DS units have been shipped in North America and Japan, after only being available for 16 weeks. The DS will launch in Europe this month, and Nintendo expects that number to reach 6 million.

Iwata showed off Nintendogs's and Electroplankton's voice and touch controls to the audience.

Speaking about Electroplankton: "This is designed to produce harmony, not adrenaline."
