  • Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller, round 3

According to japantoday.com, the U.S. district court in Oakland, CA has handed down a decision in the ongoing Immersion Corp. vs. Sony patent infringement case. For those that aren't aware, Sony and Immersion have been locked in a legal battle for years over Sony's use of the Dual Shock controller, with Immersion claiming Sony is infringing on their patents.

Initially both Sony and Microsoft were part of the case, but Microsoft settled out of court with a $26 million payment for licensing rights and an equity investment, as well as a $9 million convertible debenture from Immersion with 48 months draw down rights (Microsoft actually gained partial ownership of Immersion thanks to the deal).

So while Microsoft took a quick and easy way out, Sony decided to fight an uphill legal battle. Two verdicts have already been handed down, both with Sony coming out a loser. Today Sony suffered its third loss, with the newest verdict requiring Sony to pay $90.7 million in damages to Immersion. Along with the large sum of money, Sony has also been ordered to stop selling 40 games, whose titles are unknown at this time.

With the third ruling, could this legal battle finally be over, or will Sony continue to throw money in to what appears to be a losing battle.
