Yoshiki Okamoto, former Capcom producer, has let a cat out of its proverbial bag in an interview with the official Japanese Xbox website. That cat being that based on talks he has had with Microsoft and others in the Japanese gaming market seems to show that the Xenon might be having much better Japanese support than the current Xbox is receiving.
It's no secret that the current Xbox, which is not selling well in Japan and never has over there, has not been the best place to go if you wanted games by big Japanese game makers. About the only Japanese company that has been a big supporter of the current Xbox has been Tecmo, with games such as the Dead or Alive series and Ninja Gaiden. Other big publishers, like Capcom and Konami, have put some games on the Xbox, but there are few Japanese developed Exclusive games and most of the games the Japanese publishers are putting on it are token titles, at best.
However, Okamoto said in his interview some interesting little tidbits.
“I've been hearing that some other designers will also be joining. There are a lot of surprises. I find myself saying: 'What, this development studio!? This game!? These people!?'"
"If the current line-up in development for the next-generation Xbox was revealed," he continued, "it would not only surprise users, but the entire industry. There probably wouldn't be anyone that would still be uninterested in buying the next-generation Xbox when they see the line-up."
Okamoto is already signed on to make some Xenon exclusive games, and he says that at least one of his exclusive titles is already at a playable stage, and should be on the show floor at E3. Okamoto joins a few other big name Japanese developers making exclusive games, such as Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguhi and Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi.
Although it is possible that Microsoft will make huge announcements regarding these Japanese developers at E3, it is also surmised they may leave a bigger announcement about Japanese developed Xenon games until the Tokyo Game Show to get Japanese gamers even more excited.
