  • First 25 Years Of Def Jam Chronicled In New Book

The first 25 years of pioneering Hip-Hop label Def Jam Recordings will be chronicled in the new book "Def Jam Recordings: The First 25 Years of the Last Great Record Label."

The 304-page book was written by Def Jam's founding publicist Bill Adler, along with Dan Charnas.

The Def Jam book features prefaces by founder's Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, along with influential executives Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles.

“If the amazing success of Hip-Hop—and Def Jam in particular—has taught me anything, it’s that the most powerful cultural forces are actually accidental mutations sprung from creativity and necessity, rather than carefully plotted movements,” Lyor Cohen said.

A variety of artists and executives were tapped to weave together the oral history of the seminal label, which was founded in 1984 in Rick Rubin's NYU dorm room.

Artists like Chuck D. of Public Enemy, Reverend Run of Run-DMC, Scarface, Ice-T, The Beastie Boys' Adam 'Ad Rock" Horovitz, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, executives Chris Lighty, Julie Greenwald and Bill Stephney, all comment and contribute to the book.

“In the streets, the Def Jam logo was more potent than a police badge," said former executive, Kevin Liles. "It presented us with a previously unimaginable vision of self-empowerment and entrepreneurialism.”

Some of the best-known Hip-Hop photographers have contributed photographs to the book, including Ernie Paniccioli, Glen E. Friedmen, Ricky Powell, Martha Cooper, David Corio, Janette Beckman, Michael Halesband, Annie Leibovitz and Jonathan Mannion.

"Def Jam Recordings: The First 25 Years of the Last Great Record Label" is due in book stores one September 20th.
