  • EMI Sues Makers Of "Def Jam Rapstar" Over Copyright Infringement

EMI hit the video's makers with a massive lawsuit over what they say is the illegal use of over 50 songs.

It looks like the makers of the Def Jam Rapstar video game may be heading to court soon. The game's publishers have been hit with a massive lawsuit from EMI over failure to clear a number of the songs featured in the game.

According to a recent report from Billboard, EMI is now suing Def Jam Rapstar's producers 4mm Games and Terminal Reality over the unauthorized use of a number of songs featured in the 2010 video. EMI has named 54 songs that they either partially or completely own that were used in the game, including DJ Khaled's "I'm So Hood," Lil Wayne's "Got Money" and even the Daft Punk sample featured in Kanye West's "Stronger."

Although the total amount of damages for which EMI is suing is unknown, the company is seeking $150,000 for each copyright infringement, sending the projected total to over $8 million in damages.

There are further complications with the suit due to the revenue the game earned through illegal means and the fact that the karaoke-style game also infringes upon performance rights.
