Multi-platinum R&B artist D’Angelo was charged with drunk driving and possession of a controlled substance during a routine traffic stop last night (January 11) in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia.
According to police reports the signer, who was birthed as Michael Eugene Archer, was stopped and upon searching Archer’s vehicle, Chesterfield Police Capt. Karl Leonard stated that authorities came across “what we believe to be cocaine and marijuana.”
Leonard also stated that the items were to be inspected to in detail to determine if additional charges will be filed.
In addition to the alleged narcotics, reports stated that the signer was intoxicated at the time of his arrest.
The singer is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday January 18.
In 2000, D’Angleo was awarded a Grammy for his hit “Untitled (How Does it Feel)” from the album “Voodoo”.
The aforementioned LP also took home best R&B album. Since then the singer remained under the radar and according to published reports, was struggling with drug problems.
At press time, representatives from Virgin/Cheeba Music were unavailable for comment on the matter.
