  • The Source Turns Up The Heat on Hot 97

The Source Magazine is continuing its investigation of New York's Hot 97 in its upcoming December and January issues.

The articles will serve as follow-up to the magazine's "Wizard of Hot" feature, a story that appeared in the November issue and focused on the station's alleged payola practices and controversy involving its staff. In response, Funkmaster Flex, Hot 97's flagship DJ, called out Source owners Dave Mays and Raymond "Benzino" Scott on-air for Benzino's lackluster album sales and the magazine's recent financial difficulties.

According to The Source's Daily Dose newsletter, the self-proclaimed "Hip-Hop bible" interviewed several artists that spoke out against Hot. The featured artists all tell personal accounts of being played by the station.

The publication also continues to take shots at Funkmaster Flex alleging that an anonymous witness confessed to seeing him accept a sum ranging from $500,000 to $1 million in exchange for playing records.

Meanwhile, The Source's January issue will feature an exclusive interview with Doc Wynter, Senior Vice President of Urban Programming for Clear Channel Radio. Wynter's leadership helped New York's Power 105.1 top its rival, Hot 97, in ratings for the first time recently. He gives The Source a behind-the-scenes look at a radio station's daily operations. Wynter also discusses the talks that lead to Jay-Z and Nas recently making peace at 105's recent Powerhouse concert.

While Power 105 has had recent success, Michael Saunders, the station's program director, was recently terminated for accepting payola.

Reps for Hot 97 did not return calls regarding The Source's upcoming issue at press time.
