Seven foreign rappers are at risk of being deported after they were publicly blamed for the riots that took place in France in late October and early November.
Nearly 200 politicians backed a petition that called for legal action against the rappers whose music is being blamed for inciting violence. MP Francois Grosdidier reportedly told France-Info radio that after listening to lyrics by artists such as Smala, Fabe, Salif, Lunatic, 113 and Ministere Amer that it was no surprise that youths "saw red" and were encouraged to violence.
A song by another rapper, Monsieur R, titled "Fransse" has been singled out for its lyrics. In the song, he reportedly describes France as a "bitch" to be "screwed until she drops."
Monsieur R rejected the notion, telling BBC that rap "is not a call to violence."
Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said yesterday on French television that 83 foreigners had been arrested but 40 of them can't be deported because of their age, their status as political refugees and/or the lengthy time they had spent in France.
