  • Supreme Court Declines To Hear TVT/Def Jam Appeal

A legal battle between TVT and Island Def Jam over early recordings by Ja Rule's Cash Money Click will not be decided by the Supreme Court after Justices declined to hear the case earlier today (6/26).

According to The Associated Press, TVT sought out the higher court to overturn a decision handed down by New York's 2nd U.S. Circuit of Appeals which took back a $132 million jury verdict TVT won in its original dispute with Island Def Jam Music Group.

Apparently the argument dates back to the days when Irv Gotti, born Irving Lorenzo, was an employee of TVT Records and Jeffrey Atkins, better known as Ja Rule, was a rapper in a group called Cash Money Click who were also at TVT. Although Gotti and Ja Rule eventually left TVT for greater success at Island Def Jam, TVT maintained the right to release music recorded by the group.

Court filings from Island Def Jam's lawyers claim the dispute between the two labels began in 2001 when TVT threatened to release some lackluster Cash Money Click songs at the same time as Def Jam planned to release a Ja Rule album. According to the original TVT case, a side deal struck by representatives from both parties was not honored by Island Def Jam.

The Supreme Court's decision not hear the case means the Appeals court voiding of the jury award will stand.
