The late Ol' Dirty Bastard is the honored subject of a memorial mural completed in Brooklyn this weekend.
The rapper born Russell Jones, has been immortalized via a mural on the corner of Putnam and Franklin Avenues in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. This Friday July, 7th muralist Victor Goldfeld completed the mural, which features the famed Welfare photo identification card from the rapper's first album cover. Goldfeld was commissioned by ODB's cousin Raison Allah, who selected the Putnam and Franklin location because ODB grew up there.
"Right here on this block, we used to hang out right here in front of this store," Allah recalled via a statement.
Allah will also feature the mural in the upcoming Ol' Dirty Bastard Documentary he is directing. The documentary by film production company Zu Films should be completed by the end of the month; it includes interviews with ODB's family and friends, as well as Wu-Tang brothers RZA, GZA, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Method Man, U-God, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, Cappadonna and the Killa Bees.
After a decade long career in music including collaborations with Mariah Carey, Earth, Wind & Fire, Snoop Dogg and many others ODB suffered a fatal drug overdose on November 13, 2004.
The rapper is also remembered in the anthology CD/DVD collection The Definitive Ol' Dirty Bastard Story, released by Rhino Records this June.
