Hip-Hop Museum Comes To The Bronx, Gets Capital Funding
The birth place of hip-hop will soon be home to a museum entirely dedicated to the culture.
According to The New York Sun, the New York City Council has apportioned $1.5 million in capital funding over the next two years to serve as seed money for a hip-hop museum in the northeast section of the Bronx.
City Council member, Larry Seabrook, who requested the funding, envisions the museum as platform to teach the future generation about the roots of hip-hop. Like many of his council mates who were raised on hip-hop during its early years, Seabrook is quick to distance himself from present-day hip-hop culture and its artists antics.
"We're not talking about gangster rap," Seabrook told The New York Sun, "We're talking about hip-hop."
Other lawmakers aren't too enthused with idea of using public funds for the hip-hop museum. "I'm the biggest LL Cool J fan in the council, but this is not a proper use of taxpayer money," said James Oddo of Staten Island, the council's Republican leader.
Oddo added that he supported a hip-hop museum, but only as a private venture. "If this is such a great idea, then it sells itself," he said.
Hip-Hop pioneer Grandmaster Caz , who applauded the idea of the museum, feels that him and other founders of the music should be involved in the planning and design.
"I think we need to have some kind of input," said Caz.
The museum , which will be a part of a community center, will be located at the corner of 212th Street and White Plains Road. According to Seabrook it will take up to two years to build.
