Former Source head honchos Dave Mays and Raymond "Benzino"Scott haven't even watched the ink dry on their first issue of Hip-Hop Weekly, yet the duo is already having major staffing problems.
Since Mays' and Scott's newest publishing venture Hip-Hop Weekly began landing headlines last month, the magazine's opening issue has become highly anticipated. However, word is currently circulating that the premier issue will be light on content and that the dream team assembled by Mays and Scott (which includes famed radio personalities Wendy Williams and Star & Buckwild) is already beginning to crumble.
According to inside sources, former Vibe Editor-in-Chief Mimi Valdes has already vacated her post as EIC of the new rag. There is still no official word from the publication on what happened or who will fill her shoes, but those who have glimpsed the makings of the opening issue say "it's looking real thin."
In related news, it appears that Hip-Hop Weekly is in the final stages of purchasing the domain name www.hiphopweekly.com. The site, which is currently part of the Hiphopdirectory.com global network, posted the following news about a change in ownership late last month:
"We are now in the final stages of transferring this domain name and it's entity to Mr. Mays, the founder of The Source Magazine," adding that, "We are comfortable with the vision that David Mays has for this entity and we strongly feel that with what overall has been accomplished by David in creating The Source Magazine we feel that any and all worthy men should be given a chance to reinvent themselves."
Since being ousted from The Source in January, Mays and Scott had hoped to make a comeback with the new publication. Billed as a weekly entertainment and lifestyle magazine for a hip-hop audience, Hip-Hop Weekly is slated to hit newsstands on October 16th.
