Sean "Diddy" Combs' Sean John clothing line has removed their hooded snorkel jackets from Macy's stores following a Humane Society investigation that revealed materials advertised as "faux fur" actually came from dogs.
Last week, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released the results of a mass spectrometry test which showed the Sean John jackets in question were trimmed with fur from a canine species known as "raccoon dog." The mislabeled Sean John garments have been removed from Macy's department and online stores.
"First these jackets were falsely advertised as faux fur, and then it turned out that the fur came from a type of dog," Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of HSUS said via statement. "This is an industry-wide problem, and our investigation demonstrates that retailers and designers aren't paying close enough attention to composition of the fur trim they are selling.
"It's especially problematic when the fur is sourced from China where domestic dogs and cats and raccoon dogs are killed in gruesome ways, even skinned alive," he added. "The safest course of action is for Sean Combs and other designers and retailers to stop using fur trim. That single act would solve the problems we have uncovered."
A rep for Diddy sent a response to blogger Perez Hilton who published the HSUS announcement on his site perezhilton.com.
"I was completely unaware of the nature of this material, but as soon as we were alerted, the garments were pulled off the Macy's floor and website," said Diddy via the statement. "I have instructed our outwear licensee to cease the production of any garments using this material immediately. I appreciate the tireless work that the Humane Society does and would like to thank them for bringing attention to this issue."
The Fur Products Labeling Act bars the advertising or sale of any fur product that is falsely or misleadingly labeled. Retailers that violate this act can have their merchandise seized, face criminal penalties or be forced to pay fines up to $5,000 per violation.
