Rawkus Records has announced a nation wide talent search to find the next 50 artists to represent the label.
The label is one of the firsts to readily accept unsolicited material from unsigned artists and will choose their top 50 based on their unique talents to be marketed collectively as the "Rawkus 50." Artists will be required to submit a minimum of ten mastered tracks for an album, which Rawkus will market and promote. Artists chosen will still remain totally independent and will be able to sign with any label of their choice.
"This is such a great opportunity for both artist and label," says Jarrett Myer, co-founder of Rawkus Records. "There are so many talented artists with substance and a do it yourself spirit that deserve a larger promotional outlet."
As part of the deal, those chosen for the "Rawkus 50" will be included in a national, full-page ad campaign which will run in select hip-hop magazines across the country. In addition, the artists will receive internet marketing and promotion from the label including blogs and podcasts as well as sponsored showcases in both New York and Los Angeles where the artists will perform.
"When have you ever heard of a respectable record label accepting unsolicited material from the general public? I could send my demo to Def Jam, but it's just gonna end up on someone's floor," stated Slop Funk Dust, content manager of the "Rawkus 50." "The Rawkus guys are loading up their iPod's and listening to submissions like mad men. This is the perfect opportunity for that one guy, that's been recording albums in his basement and posting his videos on youtube. It is also perfect for artists that are already established and have followings and are just interested and hungry. For those established artists this can be a way better outlet than mixtapes."
Artists are encouraged to upload their music and send their submissions via email to music@rawkus.com with "Rawkus 50" as the subject.
