  • Ice Cube Establishes Music Scholarship; Surprises ATL Kids and Families

Ice Cube continues to show his social conscience, recently visiting Atlanta where he made appearances at a local school and non-profit organization. The rapper/actor also recently established an annual music scholarship to a Minnesota College.

Ice Cube partnered with McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota to present the Ice Cube Scholarship, offered annually to one student every year in the music technology department. One of the leading colleges for contemporary music, McNally Smith offers degrees in Music Performance and Music Business.

"It has become a lifelong mission to give back to our youth and provide them with opportunities for a successful future. I am honored to be working with such a highly respected establishment such as the McNally Smith College of Music and look forward to reviewing the submissions by scholarship applicants in the coming months," Ice Cube said via statement.

The first Ice Cube Scholarship will be handed out during the 2007-2008 school year. Students already accepted by the McNally Smith College of Music in the Technology department can apply for the scholarship by May 1. Finalists will be selected based on their demonstrated ambition to pursue a music career, abilities as a producer, academic record and financial need.

Selected finalists will compete in the "Ice Cube Challenge," where each student will be given a beat and hook line by Ice Cube and then be required to fill in the bass line, arrangement and lyrics. Ice Cube will personally select the winner and present them with their scholarship.

In related news, during a recent visit to Atlanta, Cube made several appearances with local kids and families. In a combined effort with Home Depot, Cube made his first stop at DH Stanton Elementary, where he surprised kids by joining in as they built pencil boxes. Ice Cube signed his apron and offered it to Home Depot for auction, with the proceeds to be donated to the school.

Cube also made a trip to the Nicholas House, an Atlanta area non-profit organization created to help homeless families become self sufficient. The families at Nicholas house painted a new door for the house and Ice Cube obliged their request that he put his handprints and write a message on it. He also signed autographs for the families present.

Ice Cube's latest project is the film Are We Done Yet which will be released in theaters April 4. Ice Cube released his most recent album, the certified gold Laugh Now, Cry Later, last summer via his own Lench Mob Records.

This April Cube will continue to promote the album with several West Coast shows, with WC opening. Tour dates are listed below:
