Rap tycoon Russell Simmons is among those helping to organize a concert to raise funds to build a memorial to slain civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the National Mall.
The event, known as the Dream Concert, will be held Sept. 18 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. In addition to Simmons, the group spearheading the event includes music icon Quincy Jones and clothing designer Tommy Hilfiger.
Music producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis will serve as artistic directors for the concert, which has received support from event host committee members Muhammad Ali, Angela Bassett, Jamie Foxx, Whoopi Goldberg and Michael Jordan.
Proceeds from the Dream Concert will go towards the $100 million needed to complete and maintain the memorial, which will be located at the National Mall and is slated for a space on the Tidal Basin between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.
Thus far, the group has raised $79 million including sizable donations from Simmons and rapper Nelly.
"I'm honored that such a diverse and committed group of leaders have come together for a concert to help raise the remaining funds," said Harry Johnson, memorial fund president and chief executive.
The memorial, which will include a sculpture of King as well as 14 quotations from the historic leader, is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
