Busta Rhymes will be facing four separate trials for driving violations and assault charges after rejecting a prosecutor's plea deal for a second time in a Manhattan Court today (July 10).
According to the Associated Press, Assistant District Attorney Harrison Schweiloch offered Busta (born Trevor Smith) the same deal he presented the rapper in May which required Busta to serve a year in jail to cover all four cases.
"It's the same offer that the prosecutor made at the last court appearance and it's one which Busta adamantly rejects," said Scott Leemon, Busta's lawyer.
A motion by the prosecution to consolidate the two assault charges against Busta was denied by Judge Larry Stephen. The assault charges stem from two different incidents, one in which the rapper allegedly beat up a fan who spit on his car, and another in which he is accused of assaulting his former driver, Eddie Hatchett, during a dispute over back pay.
Stephen adjourned the assault cases until September 5 when he is likely to set a hearing and trial schedule.
Busta was arrested in May for drunk driving and was jailed briefly in February for driving with a suspended license.
The prosecution did not move to have the drunk-driving and suspended-license cases consolidated. Leemon said the judge will hold hearings for the drunken driving and suspended license cases to determine whether any statements Busta made to police before and after he was arrested may be used at trial.
