Bringing back the essence of the battle rap, the World Rap Championship is gearing up to begin this year's competition where MC's face off for the chance to win $50,000.
The competition, which began last year, features a 2 on 2 rap battle format in which three hundred rappers from all across the globe go head to head in 8 divisions. The lyrical sparring sessions are set to take place before a select industry crowd at secret warehouse and rooftop locations across eight city divisions, including New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Atlanta, Houston, Toronto, London and Melbourne, Australia.
The competitors will participate in more than 500 battles (60 hours) over a 5 month season for a chance to win a place in the playoffs in Las Vegas. With last year's competition drawing an audience of over 200,000 online viewers who watched the action on www.jumpoff.tv, this year's war of words is likely to draw over 1 million battle-hungry fans, with many of the battles to be broadcast on SOHH.
Separating itself from the normal one on one format, the WRC relys on team chemistry rather than individualism while also highlighting a diverse line-up of emcess from different backgrounds and cultures.
"Rap battles are one of hip-hop's most exciting elements, yet mainstream shows like 'Wild n Out', 'Yo Mama' and 'The White Rapper Show' do nothing to contribute to the evolution of MC'ing," said Harold Anthony, Format Co-Producer for WRC. "Genuine hip-hop fans don't want gimmicks, they want what's real, so via the internet we can bypass the major networks and broadcast directly to a global audience."
