Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z is slated to tie with Elvis Presley's charts record if his new album American Gangster hits No. 1 on Billboard next week, as is expected.
The album will be his 10th Billboard chart-topper, according to Nielsen SoundScan's, released wednesday (November 7). That will tie him with Elvis for second place among artists with the most No. 1 albums. The Beatles presently hold the top spot with 19.
Unweighted first-day sales for American Gangster stood at 179,000 yesterday, according to the Building Chart's panel of reporters. That's the third largest single-day figure seen on the Wednesday Building Chart since SoundScan began compiling it in September. Only Kanye West's first-day numbers for Graduation (437,000) and 50 Cent's Curtis (310,000) scored bigger.
Billboard estimates that the merchants who report to Nielsen SoundScan's Building Chart -- Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, CircuitCity, iTunes, Border's, Target, Anderson Merchandisers, and Handleman Co. -- represent 79% of the U.S. retail market.
