Sean Penn spotted with female 'friends' at Cannes, but still very 'romantic' with Scarlett Johansson

Sean Penn and Scarlett Johansson are still an item — but temptation is everywhere.

A source at the Cannes Film Festival says the 50-year-old Penn had friends of both the blond and brunette kind in a glass elevator at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes around 4 a.m. Friday.

The source tells us that after attending the black-tie amfAR benefit at the hotel and then a private yacht party with Jude Law, Penn returned to the hotel with the two "super-hot" women.

The trio then proceeded to the hotel's glass elevator and ascended to one of the three-story property's higher floors.

"They weren't sharing the elevator. They were going up together," our source says.

Penn wasn't going to his room. The actor, who attended the festival with his 17-year-old son, Hopper, was staying on the hotel's ground floor, we hear.

Our source says the actor, who earned the reputation for being moody and mercurial early in his career, seemed to be in an exceptionally friendly and good-mannered mood at the amfAR event. (He had to have been in an even better mood when "The Tree of Life," the Terrence Malick film in which he co-stars with Brad Pitt, took top honors at the festival.)

Not surprisingly, the source said, the plight of the Haitian people was on his mind.

With tables at the sold-out event going for as much as $100,000, the source said Penn — who founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization after a 2010 earthquake devastated the country — could be heard remarking how far that amount of money would go in the Caribbean country.

Stateside, a source familiar with the situation tells us that Penn and the 26-year-old Johansson, who were kissing and cozy at the White House Correspondents' Dinner last month, have had "some tension" in their relationship.

The source adds, however, that the friction is nothing serious, but more like the garden-variety stress that two famous, driven and controlling people tend to experience when they start seeing each other.

Indeed, we hear that Penn is quite "romantic" when it comes to his new lady love.

Both are on the rebound after 2010 divorces: Penn from actress Robin Wright, whom he married in 1996, and Johansson from actor Ryan Reynolds.

Penn could not be reached for comment by deadline.
