  • Sharon Stone Readies "Basic Instinct 2"

Stone poses in the 1992 original.

It's taken 12 years so far for Sharon Stone to pick up her icepick again, but it looks like Basic Instinct 2 is finally on its way into production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scottish-born director Michael Caton-Jones is in talks to direct the MGM sequel. (He's directed such thrillers as City by the Sea and The Jackal, as well as Rob Roy and This Boy's Life.)

A sequel to the 1992 hit has been long in development, with Stone and producers unable to agree on a director (Die Hard's John McTiernan was once attached) and a leading man (Stone reportedly vetoed Benjamin Bratt). In 2001, the project was shelved, and Stone sued producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar, claiming they owed her $14 million whether or not the film got made. The suit was settled out of court earlier this summer, clearing the way for the movie to get back on track.

In July, Stone told reporters that her character, novelist and killer Catherine Tramell, would have a new lover, one younger than her 1992 costar Michael Douglas or herself. She said she did wonder whether anyone wants to see the 46-year-old actress uncross her legs again. ''I'm like, 'Does anybody want to pay $12 to see me naked?''' the 46-year-old said. ''I'm like, 'I guess it's OK.'''
