Angelina Jolie says her friendship with Brad Pitt on the set of their upcoming movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith only went so far – and no further.
Saying she "thinks the world" of Pitt, the actress and U.N. goodwill ambassador, who turns 30 a week from this Saturday, tells Marie Claire magazine: "We got on great." Pressed if she and Pitt took the relationship to another level while the two were filming, the actress replied, "absolutely not."
"To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive," she says. "I could not, could not look at myself in the morning if I did that."
Pitt, 41, and Jennifer Aniston, 36, announced in January that they were separating after four and a half years of marriage. In March, Aniston filed the papers for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
There had been speculation in some tabloids that Jolie helped bring about the split, a rumor underscored when photos surfaced in April showing Pitt, Jolie and her 4-year-old son Maddox walking together on a beach in Africa. (The Marie Claire interview was conducted in late March, before these photos were taken; reps for Pitt and Jolie have yet to comment.)
After the photos were published, a source close to Pitt told PEOPLE there was nothing improper going on before the actor's separation from Aniston. "He didn't do anything while he was married," the source said. "He'll go to the grave saying that."
In the Marie Claire interview Jolie – whose marriages to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton ended in divorce – says: "I am not dating anybody. I think the next man I get involved with would have to become Mad's father, and that's a high bar as far as I'm concerned. I'm not anticipating that coming anytime soon."
