After being pushed back several times, reports say comedian Dave Chappelle is finally ready to return for Chappelle's Show's third season.
Sources say Chappelle recently met with Comedy Central President Doug Herzog in Los Angeles for the first time since flying to a South African spiritual retreat last May. The comedian's trip caused the third season to be put on hold indefinitely. Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox didn't share any details of the meeting and wouldn't say when Chappelle would return to Comedy Central. Under the terms of the $50 million deal he signed last summer, Chappelle is contractually obligated to the network until 2006. Just last month, Herzog stated that he didn't expect Chappelle's Show to come back to the network this year. The series' third season was initially slated to premiere May 31.
Meanwhile, the comedian denied rumors that his spontaneous vacation was caused by drug or psychiatric problems. Chappelle told Time Magazine he was "stressed out" and decided to "take a minute and pull a Flintstone--stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes" because he wasn't pleased with the show's creative direction. Chappelle eventually returned to Yellow Springs, Ohio last month and then to Los Angeles last week.
He even shocked crowds at two local comedy clubs after taking the stage for unexpected stand up sets last week. Word is he told the audience he just felt like performing. The comedian also made a surprise appearance during Common's show at Los Angeles' House of Blues this past Monday. Accompanied by comedian Chris Rock, Chappelle jumped on stage and thanked the crowd for making Com's new LP, Be, a commercial success. Chappelle then demanded that the Chicago lyricist perform his favorite song on the record, "The Food," a track Com and Kanye West performed live on his show's second season.
In related Chappelle news, DVDs of Chappelle's Show's second season have been selling quite impressively. The season has already sold 1.4 million copies so far. The first season has sold 2.9 million copies to date and stands as the best selling TV series DVD of all time.
