A woman recently called police to file a report about a missing cell phone.
The woman told Spartanburg County deputies she lost her phone at the Copper River restaurant in Boiling Springs.
The woman told police she later learned that someone found her phone and was sending nude pictures she had stored in the phone to people in her contact list.
The woman told police she had the phone cut off.
According to some cell phone providers, preventing embarrassing situations like the one above can be avoided by pushing a few buttons.
"You can completely lock (the phone), and they can't make calls," said Braddon Tesner who works at Got Signal, a Verizon retailer near Traveler's Rest.
He said most basic cell phones can be locked with a four-digit passcode, so even if the phone is stolen, the theif can't use it.
He said that most customers don't use security settings on basic cells phones, but that interest in security is increasing.
"A lot of people ask how to lock especially the smart phones," he said.
He said that because devices like the Droid, Blackberry and iPhone give customers access to email, Facebook accounts and the internet, customers are more careful about making sure the phone can't be tampered with.
"There are also different locks for different applications," Tesner said. In addition to a password to begin using the smart phone, he said customers can download security guards for individual programs like email accounts and photo albums.
He said that no matter what security a phone has, if it is lost or stolen the owner should immediately call the provider to have service cut off.
