  • Air Marshal Shoots, Kills Passenger

Rigoberto Alpizar, 44, a U.S. citizen, was shot dead by a federal air marshal Wednesday in Miami after claiming he had a bomb on a plane, officials said.

An agitated passenger who claimed to have a bomb in his backpack was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday after he bolted frantically from a jetliner that was boarding for take off, officials said. No bomb was found.

It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at anyone, Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said. Another federal official said there was no apparent link to terrorism.

The passenger, identified as Rigoberto Alpizar, a 44-year-old U.S. citizen, was gunned down on a jetway just before the American Airlines plane was about to leave for Orlando, near his home in Maitland.

According to a witness, the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757, flailing his arms, while his wife tried to explain that he was mentally ill and had not taken his medication.

The passenger indicated there was a bomb in his bag and was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said. The marshals went after him and ordered him to get down on the ground, but he did not comply and was shot when he apparently reached into the bag, Doyle said.

American Airlines Flight 924, which had arrived from Colombia, was about to leave Miami for Orlando when Alpizar bolted from the plane.

Flight 924, which originated in Quito, Ecuador, had arrived in Miami just after noon, and the shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. as the plane was about to take off for Orlando with the man and 119 other passengers and crew, American spokesman Tim Wagner said. Alpizar had arrived in Miami earlier in the day from Ecuador, authorities said.

The flight's baggage was checked for bombs. The incident was the first time since 9/11 that an air marshal had shot at anyone, the government said.

After the shooting, investigators spread passengers' bags on the tarmac and let dogs sniff them for explosives, and bomb squad members blew up at least two bags.

No bomb was found, said James E. Bauer, agent in charge of the Federal Air Marshals field office in Miami. He said there was no reason to believe there was any connection to terrorists.

The concourse where the shooting took place was shut down for a half-hour, but the rest of the airport continued operating, officials said.

"This was an isolated incident," the airline said in a news release, adding that none of the other passengers or crew members were ever in danger.

Federal officials declined to say how many times Alpizar was shot, or reveal how many air marshals were on the plane.

Mary Gardner, a passenger aboard the Orlando-bound flight, told WTVJ-TV in Miami that the man ran down the aisle from the rear of the plane. "He was frantic, his arms flailing in the air," she said. She said a woman followed, shouting, "My husband! My husband!"

Gardner said she heard the woman say her husband was bipolar - a mental illness also known as manic-depression - and had not had his medication.

Gardner said four to five shots were fired. She could not see the shooting.

There were 119 other people on the plane. The concourse where the shooting took place shut down for a half-hour; the rest of the airport continued operating.

After the shooting, police boarded the plane and told the passengers to put their hands on their heads, Gardner said.

"It was quite scary," she told the TV station via a cell phone. "They wouldn't let you move. They wouldn't let you get anything out of your bag."

Relatives said Alpizar had been on a working vacation in Peru. A neighbor who said he had been asked to watch the couple's home described the vacation as a missionary trip.

"We're all still in shock. We're just speechless," said Kelley Beuchner, a sister-in-law.

There were only 32 air marshals at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Bush administration hired thousands more afterward, but the exact number is classified.

Looks like another big lawsuit is about to happen. But I don't blame the air marshal for killing the passenger. After 911 you just can't take a chance.

THANK GOD They KILLED the Bastard

Being bipolar is NO EXCUSE for his actions.Thats just a crutch and really pathetic to even try to use that as an excuse to justify his actions. If I were that air marshal I would have not only shot him DEAD but I would have kept ReLoading my gun and kept popping his body full of bullets,to set an example.

Then they should have severed off his head as a soviner to display on both Arab and American TV that this is what happens to you if you come to this country and try to pull that crap. This scum of human waste tried to terrorize Americans, so he got EXACTLY what he deserved. I hope God also doesn't spare any mercy on this evil piece of craps soul. May he BURN BURN BURN in HELL for ever and ever and ever. He also paints a bad and totally UnTrue picture of bipolar people. Most bipolar people even when they get really into a deep depression would still or at least I hope they would sttill have enough COMMON SENSE NOT to do something so STUPID and if they are that stupid then they need to be SHOT DEAD!!!!!!!!!

AMEN......God Bless the air marshal for killing a worthless piece of human waste scum. Lets all pray that God spare NO mercy on his evil wicked soul.

You are a very sick person. You have no idea what you are talking about. Your are clueless! The marshal did not have to shoot. If there was in fact a bomb, and this guy was serious about blowing up the plane or airport we all know it would have been done if he got that far with a damn bomb! Nobody who actually has a bomb would do such a thing as to say they had one.

And even if you must shoot, do people in authority have to shoot to kill? Ever hear of shoot to wound?

            they handled it correctly

And I can only imagine the total uproar had this guy actually been carrying a bomb...they didn't shoot him...and he set it off. So they do the only thing they could which was shoot the guy, and now I see on TV people having a fit. I have news for you pin heads. You cannot have it both ways. You either stand back, shut up, and let every terrorist, criminal, lunatic, psychotic killer, or hater monger have their way and do what they want....or you accept the fact that an attempt to keep us all safe means stuff like this is going to happen. It's your choice. It's the same deal as parents wringing their hands over the drug situation, but then throwing a fit if the school wants to have drug sniffing dogs check the lockers.

The price of some measure of security is you have to make though choices, you have to limit some freedoms, and you have to kill some people clearly being a threat. If this guy was running up and down the isles, yelling he had a bomb, ignoring people pointing a gun at him and telling him to get down, then you tell me what on earth they were supposed to do...huh??? And if this wife of his KNEW he had mental problems, then what was she doing letting him fly, get in this position, or be off his medication?? Sorry. The air marshalls did the job they were hired to do, and any the bleeding heart wimp asses who don't get the picture...shut up. You'll be the very first ones crying and moaning about needing to be protected the day some terrorist lunatic group sets a nuke off in this country.
