Former Ohio State wide receiver Ray Small says that a story published by the school's student newspaper misrepresented his words about the Buckeyes football program.
The Lantern published a story Thursday in which Small was quoted as saying "everybody" on the football team broke NCAA rules and that he sold Big Ten championship rings to cover his cost of living during his time on the football team.
On Friday, Small told WBNS-10TV that the newspaper "flipped my words."
"It's hard being an athlete," Small said. "That was basically what I was saying. (The Lantern author) just flipped my words around and make the whole Buckeye Nation hate me."
Zack Meisel, the editor at The Lantern, says the newspaper stands by the story.
"We, 100 percent, stand by our story," Meisel said. "Everything (Small) said was recorded."
Since the story was published, other current and former Ohio State football players have lashed out against Small's comments.
And earlier Friday, it was reported that Edward Rife, the tattoo shop owner whose purchase of memorabilia from football players was at the center of the current investigation into the football program, has been charged with drug trafficking and money laundering.
