Agent: Terrell Owens not retiring
The agent for Terrell Owens confirmed Tuesday that the receiver had surgery to repair a torn ACL this offseason but said his client will be ready for the 2011 season and is not considering retirement.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus called in to ESPN's "SportsCenter" on Tuesday to clarify the reports on Owens' injury and said the receiver had the surgery in April and will be ready to hit the football field in August.
"He's many, many months into his recovery now. He's doing fantastic," Rosenhaus told ESPN. He said Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery on Owens, was confident the 37-year-old receiver had a chance to play as soon as August.
Rosenhaus called speculation that Owens was contemplating retirement "nonsense."
"He is a legendary healer. He comes back from injury faster than anybody I've ever seen," Rosenhaus said.
Rosenhaus would not reveal how Owens injured the knee but said it did not happen while the receiver was taping a TV show for VH1, as one source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
Another source said Owens tore the ACL during a personal workout but other sources could not confirm the cause of injury.
Rosenhaus said the injury was to the same knee that Owens injured at the end of the 2010 season but that the injuries are unrelated. Rosenhaus said that injury was a cartilage injury and this injury involved the ACL and was a "clean tear."
"He's been around people for months that had no idea he had this surgery," Rosenhaus said.
Rosenhaus said he's confident Owens will be playing in the NFL this season and that the only criteria his client is looking for is to join a winning organization.
"The most important thing to him is he would like to win," Rosenhaus said.
Owens has said he intended to play a 16th season after catching 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns for the Bengals, who signed him to a one-year, $2 million contract last year. He will be a free agent when the NFL lockout ends but his injury status clearly puts his season, and perhaps his career, in question.
Career-wise, Owens ranks behind only Jerry Rice in all-time receiving yardage and is third behind Rice and Randy Moss in receiving touchdowns.
