  • Former ESPN Sports Personality Jay Mariotti Ordered To Stand Trial

Former ESPN sports personality Jay Mariotti -- who pleaded no contest last year to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge stemming from a run-in with his ex-girlfriend -- was ordered today to stand trial on charges that he stalked and assaulted her.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark Windham found sufficient evidence to require Mariotti to proceed to trial on one felony count each of stalking, corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and two misdemeanor counts of disobeying a domestic court order.

Mariotti allegedly confronted the woman at a restaurant last Sept. 30 -- the same day he pleaded no contest involving a run-in with her at a Santa Monica club and was ordered to serve three years probation, perform 40 days of community labor and complete a 52-week domestic violence class.

He also is accused of grabbing the woman outside a Venice restaurant around midnight on April 15 of this year, pulling out a chunk of her hair and grabbing her cell phone away as he shouted at her, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Mariotti, 52, of Santa Monica, formerly worked as a panelist on the ESPN talk show Around the Horn and penned sports columns for the Denver Post and Chicago Sun-Times.
