  • Cardinals activate Pujols from disabled list

The St. Louis Cardinals have activated Albert Pujols from the disabled list.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa told ESPN The Magazine's Tim Kurkjian that Pujols is available to pinch-hit Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Reds and is expected to start Wednesday night.

To make room for Pujols on the 40-man roster, the Cardinals placed reliever Brian Tallet on the disabled list, retroactive to Monday.

Tuesday was the first day Pujols was eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list. He broke his wrist in a collision at first base trying to make a tag with his glove hand of the Kansas City Royals' Wilson Betemit on June 19.

After taking indoor batting practice and fielding grounders outside on Monday, Pujols said there was no pain and added that he felt great.

The team initially believed the three-time NL MVP would be out six weeks and could return at the start of August. Pujols underwent a CT scan Friday that indicated fast progress and said he'd been hitting for about a week with the wrist taped.

Pujols had been among the league leaders with 17 home runs and 45 RBIs, but his .279 average is 50 points below his career numbers.
