  • Allan Guei, Compton HS basketball star, donates $40,000 from free throw contest to runners-up

Like the best point guards, Allan Guei makes everyone around him better - and not just on the court.

The 18-year-old Compton High School basketball star donated his $40,000 prize from a California free throw shooting contest to seven classmates to help cover their college bills.

"They were all smart and wanted to pursue their dreams, but were having financial difficulties," Guei told The Los Angeles Times. "I felt it was the right move to help the others."

Guei's generosity came after he received a full scholarship to play hoops at Cal State Northridge, even though he could have kept both his free ride and most of the money.

He made the announcement at last month's Compton graduation ceremony to the delight of his fellow seniors.

"I'm in shock," said Omar Guzman, 17, who is headed to San Diego State University. "I'm really grateful there are people like that out there. It was generous."

The free throw shooting contest to cover college expenses was the creation of the aptly-named Court Crandall, a local advertising executive.

The 5-foot-9 Guei was among the 80 seniors who qualified for the shootout by posting a 3.0 GPA. Eight were chosen at random for their shot at the college cash.

Guei captured the pressure-packed contest by hitting 5-of-10 free throws - and then delivered his assist to the seven runners-up.
