Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder through months of therapy and psychological and neurological exams at Boston’s McLean Hospital, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
The mental illness, also known as BPD, results in difficulties with self-image and controlling moods and emotions.
Marshall has informed the Dolphins of his diagnosis, according to the Sun Sentinel. He plans to create more awareness for BPD and advocate better treatment and coverage for a program that came with a $60,000 price tag, he told the paper.
"By no means am I all healed or fixed," Marshall said.
Marshall told the newspaper his treatment in Boston offered clarity.
"It wasn't till I got here that I understood why I was so unhappy, why I was so miserable," Marshall said. "But understanding is merely the beginning of the journey."
Marshall plans to help others who might have the same mental illness, he told the Sun Sentinel.
"I'll be the face of BPD,” Marshall said. “I'll make myself vulnerable if it saves someone's life because I know what I went through this summer helped save mine."
