It sounds like the feud between former Los Angeles Lakers teammates Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal was uglier than most people realized.
O'Neal has a new tell-all book set to hit bookstores on November 15 and the website Deadspin has posted some excerpts.
The former Lakers centre said in the book that he told teammates, "I'm going to kill him" after Bryant did an interview with Jim Gray and said that O'Neal was fat, out of shape and milking a toe injury. O'Neal said that the injury ended his career in the sense he was never the same after it.
After the interview aired, drama continued to unfold in the dressing room as Bryant complained that O'Neal didn't have his back with regard to his impending rape trial in Colorado.
"Well, I thought you'd publicly support me, at least," O'Neal wrote that Bryant told him about the impending trial. "You're supposed to be my friend."
Teammate Brian Shaw stepped in and questioned Bryant's "friendship" with teammates in the lockeroom and then things began to settle down but not before O'Neal fired one more salvo: "If you ever say anything like what you said to Jim Gray ever again, I will kill you."
