  • Chiefs claim Kyle Orton

The Kansas City Chiefs claimed former Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton on waivers Wednesday, an NFL source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

This means they now will take over his contractual rights for the remainder of this season and the Broncos are free of the $2.5 million they would have owed Orton. The Bears also put in a waiver claim for him. The Broncos waived Orton on Tuesday.

Matt Cassel hurt his throwing hand in the Chiefs' 17-10 loss to Denver on Nov. 13 and had season-ending surgery the next day. His replacement, Tyler Palko, threw three interceptions in his first start, a 34-3 loss at New England on Monday night.

Kansas City plays the Broncos in Denver in both teams' regular-season finale, a game that could be very meaningful in the AFC West title picture. The Chiefs (4-6) trail the second-place Broncos (5-5) by one game. The Oakland Raiders lead the division with a 6-4 mark.

The Bears were interested in Orton after starter Jay Cutler broke the thumb on his right throwing hand last weekend and might miss the rest of the regular season with the injury. His backup is Caleb Hanie. Chicago signed veteran Josh McCown Wednesday afternoon after losing out on their claim for Orton.
