The Miami Dolphins fired coach Tony Sparano on Monday, a source confirmed to ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross plans to hire Carl Peterson, former president of the Kansas City Chiefs, to fill the role of executive vice president of football operations once held by Bill Parcells, the source said.
Also, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland will stay on board in some capacity.
Assistant head coach/secondary Todd Bowles will take over the team on an interim basis, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
In 2008, Sparano led the Dolphins to a surprising AFC East title in his first season, guiding Miami to an 11-5 record. But the Dolphins haven't had a winning record since and are 4-9 this season.
He finishes his Dolphins career with a 29-32 record.
Miami began the 2011 season 0-7. The Dolphins had won four of their past five games before losing at home to the Eagles on Sunday.
Before Miami won at Kansas City on Nov. 6, the Dolphins had a 10-game losing streak dating to last season. Before Miami defeated Washington at Sun Life Stadium on Nov. 13, the Dolphins had lost 12 of their previous 13 home games.
Sparano becomes the third coach fired this season, joining the Jagaurs' Jack Del Rio and Chiefs' Todd Haley.
