UCLA has dismissed tight end Raymond Nelson and defensive lineman Wesley Flowers for a violation of team rules while defensive back Randall Carroll was dismissed for failing to meet academic requirements, the school announced Monday after new coach Jim Mora met with the team for the first time.
"At UCLA, we have a high set of standards that we expect every student-athlete to adhere to," Mora said in a statement issued by the school. "Unfortunately, these three gentlemen choose not to do so.
Nelson, a reserve freshman, appeared in eight games for UCLA this season, but did not have a catch. He is the younger brother of Reeves Nelson, an all-conference forward for the Bruins' basketball team who was dismissed by coach Ben Howland earlier this season for conduct issues.
Carroll is a receiver who had three catches for 34 yards before making the switch to defensive back in the middle of this season. He was used mostly in third down situations as a defensive back. One of the fastest players on the team, Carroll was the California high school state champion in the 100 and 200 meters in 2008. He finished sixth in the 100 in the Pac-10 championships last year.
Carroll's career at UCLA was filled with turmoil. He was among four players suspended for a game in 2009 for a violation of team rules and caused a stir later that year with a Twitter message disparaging then-offensive coordinator Norm Chow. This season, he was among six UCLA players suspended after participating in a benches-clearing brawl Oct. 20 against Arizona.
Flowers is a little-used redshirt freshman who battled injuries all season.
