San Francisco 49ers star rookie linebacker Aldon Smith, who played a big role in the team’s trip to the NFC championship game, was arrested Friday night and charged with driving under the influence, CBSMiami.com reported.
According to the report, Smith, 22, remains in custody on $1,000 bond and will have a bond hearing on Sunday.
Smith, a first-round pick from Missouri, immediately established himself as one of the NFL’s best edge rushers in 2011. He had 14 sacks in the regular season—leaving him half a sack short of Jevon Kearse’s league rookie record—and collected two more in the playoffs.
Smith (6-4, 258) made a smooth transition to outside linebacker in the 49ers’ 3-4 scheme after being a down lineman at Missouri. He was the seventh overall pick in last April’s draft.
