  • MLB Pulls 'Spider-Man' Promo After Negative Reaction

Spider-Man ads on bases didn't fly with baseball fans.

A day after announcing a novel promotion to put advertisements on bases next month, Major League Baseball reversed course Thursday and eliminated that part of its marketing deal for 'Spider-Man 2.''

"It isn't worth, frankly, having a debate about,'' commissioner Bud Selig said in Oakland before the Yankees-Athletics game.

"I'm a traditionalist,'' he said. "The problem in sports marketing, particularly in baseball, is you're always walking a very sensitive line. Nobody loves tradition and history as much as I do.''

After Selig and others heard the backlash, Spider-Man got picked off base.

"The bases were an extremely small part of this program," said Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer. "However, we understand that a segment of our fans was uncomfortable with this particular component and we do not want to detract from the fan's experience in any way."

Under the original plan, red-and-yellow ads were to appear on bases -- but not home plate -- during games from June 11-13. The plan began to crumble Wednesday night when the New York Yankees said they would only allow the ads on bases during batting practice -- and only for one game that weekend.

While the logos will not be put on bases in big league games, it's still not certain whether they will appear during warmups.

"I thought it was good to pull it," Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams said. "For so many years, we've just had uniforms and bases with no logo. It doesn't surprise me, baseball being the conservative sport that it's always been. It's so slow to change."

The ads were to appear as part of a deal involving Major League Baseball Properties, Marvel Studios and Sony Inc., the parent of Columbia Pictures, which is releasing the movie on June 30. The promotion will go on with giveaways and other ads at ballparks that weekend.

"We listened to the fans," said Geoffrey Ammer, president of worldwide marketing for the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group. "We never saw this coming, the reaction the fans had. It became a flashpoint -- the reaction was overwhelming."

"We don't want to do anything that takes away from a fan's enjoyment of the game," he said. "Some people thought it was a great idea, but others saw it as sacrilegious."

Ammer said his group approached baseball about pulling the bases promotion.

"We could easily solve it," he said.

Many baseball purists denounced the plan, including Fay Vincent, a former baseball commissioner and president of Columbia Pictures. Having watched jockeys earn the right to have ads on their uniforms for the Kentucky Derby, some thought it was a step too far in the increasing commercialization of sports."

"I think they made a good decision to change their minds," former commissioner Peter Ueberroth said. "I don't think it makes any sense at all. It's a clutter."

Teams will have the option of having ads on their on-deck circles during games, according to Jacqueline Parkes, baseball's senior vice president for marketing and advertising.

Baseball's Hall of Fame said it could find no records of ads ever appearing on bases during games.

"At the end of the day, as we said yesterday, it was the smallest element, not that important to us," Parkes said. "While it was something originally they wanted, it is not worth risking or damaging the fans' experience."

Baseball officials were surprised by the reaction, which included several front-page stories in Wednesday's newspapers.

"It just shows the strength of Major League Baseball and the place people put it," Parkes said.

Minnesota Twins outfielder Torii Hunter -- nicknamed "Spider-Man" for his acrobatic catches -- was disappointed by the reversal.

"It's for kids, and kids love it," he said. "It would have been cool to see the Spider-Man logo for those three days. Kids could have worn their Spider-Man gear to the stadium."

Oakland outfielder Billy McMillon liked the decision.

"I just wonder where this leads to. Will it be the Bad News Bears with Chico's Bail Bonds on the back of our uniforms?" he said.

"I understand revenue, but I didn't think it would invade baseball. I never thought it would come to this. They're wise not to put it on our uniforms."

      hypocrites

Some say that putting a logo on bases goes against the pureness of the game. These same purist let the mound height be decreased, let in the DH and now reject an idea that could bring money into the game and possibly help small market teams that these so called fans don't want contracted out of the league. And for what three days come on give me a break. Don't these people realize that without more creative ideas about advertising and revenue sharing baseball will be lessened to maybe 24 teams in the near future with the same 4-6 winning it all within a short period of time.

        Bad Idea

I would have to go against it. We shouldn't be putting advertising on our bases. What's the point of that? To make MORE money? If you haven't seen already, Baseball makes TONS of money. Yes there are some small market teams, but if there owners were willing to pay more, then guess what, they would have more money. If everybody was like George then players would be asking for 100 million dollar salarys FOR ONE YEAR. No, small marked teams will get better, it will just take some time. Putting logos on bases is just a bad idea.

It's dumb broads like you who have no tolerance for the history of the game that make it hard for small markets to compete. How many games have you personally paid to see in the past five years? Have you bought apparel, games, anything team related?

If not, fuck off you stupid cunt *kisses*

I make a good point and all you can do is call me names? Are you still upset cause your manhood is so tiny?

Its a base. You won't be able to see it from your seats, and if you watch from home they will mention it so infrequently you won't even notice. Is this worse than the DH? Is this worse than not having a salary cap? Is this worse than steroid rumors? Is this worse than MLB creating the most powerful union in the world? Its called making money, thats what businesses are in the business of doing. MLB is a business. And if your arguement is that it is our National Pastime, think again. The NFL has been wearing that crown for many years.

That doesn't change the fact that it puts advertising on the field of play. It directly goes against the tradition of the game. Keep in mind, baseball is the only major sport in this country with any kind of deep rooted history.

Yes, much worse. The DH actually lengthened careers and help bring people back to the park.

Yes. The game will survive either way but tradition is what counts here.

Stupid bitch. When did I ever make the remark that baseball is the national pasttime? You can't spell for shit, either.

Look, baseball doesn't need the extra revenue. The monies gained from doing this publicity stunt weren't going to small market teams. The money was going into the pocket of MLB itself. I don't mind having marketing in the stadium - I'm all for a free market and capitalism - but I do not want advertising on the field of play or the uniforms (including batting helmets)

                  You stupid little monkey

Short Irish Guy...you stupid little monkey. You act like baseball is some fucking holy tradition, some sacred pastime. That's what I meant.

Let's see what we have here. We sell the name of the stadium and place huge lettering on the front of these stadium proclaiming the sponsors name. The players sign contracts with sponsors and then wear their wares. We place advertisements on the outfield walls, scoreboards and inside walls of the stadium. Companies pay big money to have their food or beverages marketed and sold at the stadiums. And now we want to sell a space on the bases? Where's there the problem? As fans we will be too far away to see it, so the advertisement is for the benefit of the first, second and third basemen... ohhh, and the shortstop.

If that is a no-no then the players need to remove the Nike logos from their shoes and gloves.

Let's not stop there. Little leaguer cannot have sponsors. What about car racing? let's limit the number of advertisers that one can have on their cars.
With all else that goes on in the world this is what we want to protect the purity of? It's all a part of the game of baseball. Next time you walk into the stadium look around.

If baseball would of stayed with your "tradition" it would of been dead by now. Just look at all the changes since the game started fuck face.

Baseball has the longest history of the four major sports in our country...

You're right! The DH was the end of baseball. The extended rosters for the All-Star Game was going to be the end of baseball...
