  • Grades Sideline UCLA's Cummings for Fall Games

UCLA forward T.J. Cummings has been declared ineligible for the fall quarter because he did not meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements.

That means Cummings, who averaged 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds last season, will miss a minimum of three regular-season games along with two exhibition games. He will be allowed to practice with the team during that time.

"We expect our players to excel both in the classroom and on the basketball court,'' UCLA coach Ben Howland said Thursday. "As a staff and team, we will support T.J. in his academic pursuits.''

Howland was hired last spring to succeed Steve Lavin, who was fired after seven seasons with the Bruins.

Cummings' academic status will be re-evaluated in mid-December, at the conclusion of fall quarter final exams. If Cummings is eligible following the fall quarter, he could play in some or all of UCLA's games between the fall and winter quarters. The winter quarter begins Jan. 8.

Cunnings played in all 29 games last season, starting 16. He has played in the most games on the team, 94, including 23 starts.

Starting forward Andre Patterson, who averaged 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds last season, was dismissed from school in April for academic reasons. Patterson has two years of eligibility remaining.

UCLA had its first losing record -- 10-19 -- in 55 years last season. Lavin had a 145-78 record at the school.
