  • Ricky Williams files retirement papers

Ricky Williams filed retirement papers with the NFL, 1½ weeks after telling the Miami Dolphins he was walking away from football at 27.

The papers were filed with the NFL Management Council on behalf of the Miami Dolphins' running back by his lawyer, David Cornwell. They are not binding, meaning that Williams could return if he chooses.

However, the Heisman Trophy winner told The Miami Herald last week that he had failed a third test for marijuana. Although the NFL has not acknowledged that Williams failed any tests, league spokesman Greg Aiello noted that the league's labor agreement counts retirement as an another step in the drug program.

That means Williams might be subject to a year's suspension.

Till this day I still don't blame him for what he did. Obviously he felt he needed to do something better in life. I don't know what that might be. But he has good intensions on the subject.
