  • After Injury, Maddox Is Out, Roethlisberger Is in

For the Pittsburgh Steelers, the future is now.

Starting quarterback Tommy Maddox is expected to be sidelined for an extended period with a right elbow injury, forcing first-round pick Ben Roethlisberger into the lineup.

Maddox was injured in the third quarter of Sunday's 30-13 loss after getting hit by cornerback Gary Baxter.

"Tommy has a strained or torn muscle in his elbow," Steelers coach Bill Cowher said Sunday. "I'm not exactly sure at this point. In either case it's going to be an extended period of time. We'll see what our options are and make them accordingly, but certainly that would make Ben our starter at this time."

Selected 11th overall out of Miami (Ohio), Roethlisberger replaced Maddox on Sunday and completed 12-of-20 passes for 176 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. One of his interceptions was returned for a touchdown.

Roethlisberger wil made his first start Sunday at Miami, which has one of the NFL's better defenses.

The 2002 NFL Comeback of the Year when he guided the Steelers to the playoffs, Maddox struggled last season when he threw 18 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions.
