The news keeps getting worse for the Indiana Pacers.
The Indianapolis Star reported Friday that All-Star forward Jermaine O'Neal likely will be placed on the injured list due to a strained ligament in his left foot.
If O'Neal is placed on the IL, he must miss at least five games.
O'Neal, 26, originally hurt the foot in August and has not played since the third game of the preseason. He also is the latest Pacer to go down with an injury.
Starting center Jeff Foster underwent surgery Wednesday to repair torn cartilage in his right hip and backup point guard Anthony Johnson suffered a broken bone in his right hand. Both are expected to be out six to eight weeks.
A three-time All-Star who finished third in voting for the Most Valuable Player last season, O'Neal averaged 20.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game in 2003-04. He became the first Pacer since George McGinnis from the old ABA days to average at least 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds in consecutive seasons.
Indiana opens the regular season on Wednesday at Cleveland.
