The SUV John Elway received for being selected MVP of the 1999 Super Bowl has been stolen.
The white 2000 Ford Expedition was stolen from the Coeur d'Alene airport around Aug. 23, Kootenai County Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Ben Wolfinger said Wednesday. He said there has been no sign of the $35,700 vehicle since and no suspects have been identified in the case.
"It's white, has tinted windows and Colorado plates,'' Wolfinger said. "It would stand out in north Idaho.''
Elway, who has a vacation home on Lake Coeur d'Alene, keeps a private jet and some vehicles in a hanger at the airport. Pilot Sid Jelsma left the SUV inside a fence that surrounds the hanger, according to the theft report.
The keys were inside the unlocked vehicle because it was assumed thieves could not reach it, the report said.
But someone apparently scaled the fence and drove it away, because the gate opens automatically from the inside, according to Elway's mechanic, James Walsh, the report said.
"This is not a real pleasant thing,'' said Kathy Hatch, Elway's assistant. "This is his MVP car from the Super Bowl.''
The vehicle contains no special markings indicating it belongs to Elway or was connected to the Super Bowl, Hatch said.
Sheriff's deputies first learned of the theft last Friday, Wolfinger said.
Elway retired in 1999 after 16 seasons as quarterback for the Denver Broncos, winning Super Bowls in his last two seasons. He is an owner of an Arena Football League team in Denver.
