  • Floyd Reportedly Agrees to Coach at USC

Tim Floyd has reportedly agreed to take over the Southern California basketball program, as long as he can work out a financial deal with the New Orleans Hornets, his former employer.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram said the deal between Floyd and USC is done, but the school is only waiting for the Hornets to settle the remainder of the coach's contract before making an announcement.

The 50-year-old Floyd was fired by the Hornets in May and is still under contract through next season.

The paper quoted a source as saying "it could be settled fairly soon," but also said the Christmas holiday could put off an official announcement until next week.

The Trojans are playing this season under interim coach Jim Saia, who took over when Henry Bibby was fired on December 6, just four games into the season. Rick Majerus then agreed to take over the program next season, but health problems forced him to resign less than a week after accepting the position.

Floyd spent just one year with the Hornets, guiding them to a 41-41 mark in 2003-04. He also had the unenviable task of taking over the Chicago Bulls after their title run and had a dismal record of just 49-190 from the start of the 1998-99 season through December 2001.

Before taking on the NBA, however, Floyd had a great run on the collegiate level.

In four years at Iowa State, just before he took over at Chicago, Floyd guided the Cyclones to a record of 81-49 with three NCAA Tournament appearances. The school reached a regional semifinal in 1997, dropping a 74-73 overtime decision to UCLA.

Prior to being the top man at Iowa State, Floyd was a head coach at the University of Idaho from 1986-88 and then took over the head position for the University of New Orleans, where he spent the next six seasons, and led the Privateers to a 127-58 record, including NCAA Tournament berths in 1991 and 1993.

Floyd compiled an overall mark of 243-130 as a college head coach with five NCAA Tournament appearances.
