Randy Johnson moved a step closer to joining the Yankees when commissioner Bud Selig approved a proposed trade between Arizona and New York, The Associated Press learned Monday.
New York was given until Thursday to work out a contract extension with the five-time Cy Young Award winner, two baseball officials said on condition of anonymity. Johnson's current deal pays him $16 million in 2005 and expires after this season.
