  • USC's Carroll Says He Has No Interest in 49ers Job

Southern California coach Pete Carroll, mentioned as a possible target of the San Francisco 49ers' coaching search, said Thursday that he has no interest in the job.

"I have not been contacted, I don't expect to be contacted, and I'm not interested," Carroll said.

A former 49ers assistant and later head coach of the New York Jets and New England Patriots, Carroll has guided USC to consecutive national titles.

There are several reasons why Peter Carroll would coach the niners but he won't. First of all, he has 2 National Championships, back to back no less. There is no greater accomplishment in college football, and unless he wants to set some sort of all-time record for consecutive titles, he's done all he can in the college ranks as a coach.

Next, he is losing a good number of players, this is just the nature of the college game. The chances of a 3-peat are slim to none. Everyone knows the pro game is more challenging to win at, and I'm sure Carroll would like to win in the pro's after not doing as well as he could have the first time around.

He also knows that he can get a job at any top university looking for a coach pretty much for the rest of his life, so the risk factor to try the NFL again is very small.

Last but not least, the 49ers stink. In the NFL, the worst teams pick first in the draft, and can usually free up a lot of cap room because they're not paying a stable full of superstars. (otherwise they wouldn't be last in the league). So an incoming coach who makes good use of those advantages could be heralded as a genius when in actuality it's just the salary cap and parity in the league combined with a losing record for several years running. So that's why he would, but again, he won't.

If USC wins another National Championship next season then Pete Carrol will leave if he is offered a NFL head coaching job.
